A difficult Week
We have been her almost 8 weeks, and this week seemed like the most difficult one so far. I can't really put my finger on why it has been harder, but it has.
We are still busy every day with cleaning out the house. I've been going through bags and boxes of stuff for such a long time, and it just seems like the end of this task is far away. I have found some really interesting things in my daily sorting. I found a hand written journal from 1865. I have no idea who the person that wrote is, or how we ended up with it, but I will do some searching when I have accomplished sorting through things. We found ration books from WW2. I also found my Dad's baby book. He was born in 1914. I was amazed to find it. I have also come across some of the love notes my dad wrote to my mom. So much of this adventure is so personal and there are so many memories in the boxes of stuff we have uncovered it has been very emotional for me.
We had our first week without snow fall. It was wonderful watching the snow on the ground disappear, but then came the mud!! Forgot about the mud part!!! But today it is 12 degrees and feels like -4. The wind blew so hard last night it felt like being in a horrible hurricane. There are some VERY tall trees around the house, and I couldn't sleep thinking that one of them would crash into the house. Even Chelsea couldn't sleep last night. The wind is supposed to last until later today.
This past Sunday, I had a really down day. My older brother Thomas was planning to come for dinner. I love spending time with him. On Saturday, he took a fall near his home and fractured his left arm near his shoulder and smashed the side of his face, perhaps damaging his eye. He was able to go home from the emergency room in the evening. He's no spring chicken and falls at his age can have lasting results. He seems to be doing okay. He has a cast on his arm and an eye doctor appointment today.
Hartford Health Home Care came to our house on Sunday morning to give us the Covid shots. Originally it was only for my mom, but when I asked about the "Two Old Caregivers" living with her, once they heard how old we were, they included us too!!!!! This organization has been wonderful to work with. They send a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Nurse to the house on a weekly basis. They arranged for a recliner chair for my mom. The kind that raises you up when you want to leave the chair. They have been a great support for me!
Peter is still going strong! He is now working on the one bedroom that is not being used. It had been used as a place to store stuff they didn't know what to do with. It took about a week to clean it out and go through every bag and box. We have found so many books in the house we are thinking of opening a library!!! Anyway, now that the room is empty, Peter is washing the walls and floor. The room needs to be painted because the last person to stay in the room had a thing for Lavender and dark Purple. 4 coats to cover up the purple!!!! He is restoring the floor and now that it is painted, it looks wonderful! It won't be too much longer until we can get a realtor in to give us some guidance about selling the house.
Life has become so boring and tedious. We have only been out together 3 times in 8 weeks. One of us is always at the house with mom. It has become quite depressing. I can't begin to explain how we much we miss our family in Florida. We rarely went a week without seeing the grand kids, let alone having them stay with us overnight regularly. Video calls are nice but we sure miss those hugs.
Time to get back to work. The sun is shining, the wood stove is nice and hot, and I have my best friend working along side me, so life is still good!
Miss you all.
Thanks for all you have done. I am glad you and Peter are such a good team. My dogs are not. I hate this.

ReplyDeleteSandy, You are treating this as an adventure, and it truly is. When you have the time, do the research on your ancestors. You might find that it is your ancestor's handwritten journal from 1865. What a gem that would be. Thank God that you have Peter to help you, working side by side.
ReplyDeleteSandy, I just send you a brief message, but did not include my name. Thought it would print it out as well. -Robert Warner
